EU settlement fees scrapped

Tuesday 22 January 2019

The States of Jersey will no longer be charging EU citizens who wish to settle on the island, it has been announced.

The Home Affairs Minister, Constable Len Norman, confirmed the move in a statement this afternoon.

It came following a decision by the UK Prime Minister to scrap the fee, and calls from St. Helier Deputy Rob Ward for the same to be done in Jersey.

Those wishing to stay were due to be asked to pay up to £25 to apply for settled status, but Constable Norman announced today: "Following the announcement yesterday by the Prime Minister that the UK will be removing the fee for the UK’s EU Settlement Scheme, Ministers are pleased to confirm that the fees for the Jersey Scheme will also be removed.

"This will ensure that Jersey resident EU citizens are not disadvantaged by the changes in the UK. It means that those EU citizens, who are valued members of Jersey’s community, will be able to remain in Jersey after Brexit without a fee.

"The Jersey Customs & Immigration Service will open the Jersey EU Settlement Scheme on 11 February 2019."
