Ex-BBC producer to stand for election on environment platform

Monday 28 March 2022

A former BBC producer has announced that he is standing for election this summer as an independent candidate in St. Brelade.

Jonathan Renouf says he will stand on a strong environment platform, with a commitment to open government.

Mr Renouf went to La Moye, Les Quennevais and Hautlieu schools, before completing his undergraduate degree and PhD at Durham university.

He then moved to London and worked for almost 30 years at the BBC as a TV producer, starting on Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman, before moving to BBC Science, where he oversaw the broadcast of many award-winning BBC programmes including Wonders of the Universe with Brian Cox and Climate Change – The Facts with David Attenborough.

Mr Renouf returned to Jersey in 2019 with his family, and his sons now attend Mont Nicolle and Les Quennevais schools.

While in the UK, Mr Renouf stayed involved in island affairs and in 2012 sat on Jersey’s Electoral Commission, which recommended some of the changes the island will see in this year’s election.

Mr Renouf said: “I am excited to be standing as an independent candidate for St. Brelade, and to have the opportunity to represent parishioners, and islanders, on the critical issues we are facing today.

“I will be focusing my campaign on three key themes: People, Place, Prosperity, that encapsulate the challenges that need to be addressed to ensure Jersey works for everyone.

“While not everyone will agree with all my views, I hope that they will recognise my commitment to sustainability, transparency and fairness, and my promise to bring those values to the States Assembly, if elected.”

The election takes place on 22 June.
