Ex-Shinzo employees claim £6k in unpaid wages

Wednesday 06 July 2022

A recently-closed sushi and steak restaurant in St. Aubin has been ordered to pay around £6,000 in unpaid wages to two former employees.

Shinzo announced it would be closing less that two years after its launch in May.

Owners Gavin and Lisa Roberts said they had no choice due to the impact of the pandemic and an alleged "lack of financial support" from government.

However, the Government later hit back at these claims.

Now two former employees are claiming that the restaurant owes them wages, and that they should be entitled to compensation.

Vasile Buciuman and Lorena Breton separately appeared before the Employment and Discrimination Tribunal last month to argue their case.

As well as having outstanding wages, Mr Buciuman claimed that he had been unfairly dismissed, had not received wage slips while employed, and was also owed notice pay and holiday pay.

According to a Tribunal judgment published on Tuesday, Shinzo said in a written response to the Tribunal that it contested "everything" and set out a "general offer of settlement".

There was "no contest" about wages, however, and the Tribunal decided that matter could be dealt with separately. It subsequently ordered that Mr Buciuman should be paid £3,241.00.

Ms Breton made the same claims.

Having already decided that Mr Buciuman should be entitled to receive his unpaid wages, the Tribunal concluded that Ms Breton's claim should be handled in the same way and ordered that Shinzo pay her £2,725.
