Road improvements to the eastern end of the tunnel are likely to add to motorists’ woes over the next few months.
The Department for Infrastructure is carrying out two major projects – a new zebra crossing and a resurfacing of the roundabout.
Whilst admitting the work is likely to cause some delays, the department says it’ll be trying to minimize any problems.
Work on the new zebra crossing starts this morning and should be finished by Friday 24 February. During the week it’ll take place during the quieter parts of the day – from 09:15 to 15:00. Although the road will remain open, there will be traffic restrictions. But, the road will be totally closed to motorists on Sunday 12 and 19 February, from 08:00 to 20:00.
Work on resurfacing the Green Street roundabout will take place during the school Easter holidays. It’ll start on Monday 13 March and go on until Thursday 13 April. From Monday to Friday there will be traffic restrictions in place from 09:15 until 15:00, and 19:00 to 23:00, and on Sunday 2 and 9 April from 08:00 to 20:00. If necessary, Sunday 19 and 26 March may also be used as working days.
The Department says the Green Street roundabout is one of the busiest stretches of road in the Island, but it hasn’t been resurfaced since it was first built in 1993 – 24 years ago.
