Fancy a $400k sleep?

Wednesday 22 December 2021

Islanders wanting to follow Canadian rapper Drake’s example in buying a $400,000 mattress can now fulfil their wish.

Its maker, bedding shop Hästens, has taken the place of Topman on 40 King Street, and brings the producer of some of the world’s most expensive beds to the Channel Islands.

Amongst the Swedish company's offerings is the $400k mattress owned by Drake, the Grand Vidivus - probably clearing up why he includes a loving ode to his bed in the lyrics to 'God's Plan': "I only love my bed and my momma, I'm sorry."

Other celebrity customers are reported to include Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, while its current holiday marketing campaign invites potential purchasers to "wake up like a world-class footballer", "fashion icon" or "race car driver".

The company provides its thousands of pounds of sleep using materials like pine from the forests of northern Sweden and horsehair, which it claims offers a particularly great night's rest.

Some of the "obvious" considerations it puts forward in its brochure for all its mattresses are "the direction of the scales in the wool fibre, the elasticity of the cotton threads, the pre-tension on the steel springs, the growth rate of the pine and the degree of curliness of the horsetail hairs."

However, according to the website, one must contact the store for more information on prices.

As an indication of what someone who isn't a rapper with a net worth to make the Channel Islands Lottery blush can expect, the lowest price listed on the website of US Hästens seller, the Luxury Bed Collection, is $13,980.
