First professional ballet company launched in Jersey

Monday 23 May 2022

Ballet d’Jèrri, which will be the first contemporary ballet company in the Island, held its first round of auditions in London last week.

Hoping to launch their inaugural season in January 2023, the company is looking for 10 classically trained dancers to form the initial core of the dance group.

The idea of Ballet d’Jèrri came from Carolyn Rose Ramsay, a Jersey-based dancer who has previously worked for the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, and the Norwegian National Ballet.

She moved to the Island two years ago and was immediately surprised at the lack of options for professional artists to work locally.

Carolyn, who will be the Artistic Director of the new company, said: “This amazing island has a hugely talented artistic community, but not many options for professional artists to make a living wage without leaving home.

“Our goal is to create a world-class dance company that represents the people of Jersey, and provides professional opportunities for dancers, choreographers, composers, musicians, set designers, costume designers, performing arts producers, and more.

“We aim to encourage collaborations between artists from different backgrounds and genres, and make use of the fantastic venues and stunning backdrops that Jersey has to offer.”

The Ballet d’Jèrri aims to develop three new programs per season, which will include work from both upcoming and established choreographers. The plan is for performances to initially premier in Jersey, and then later be taken on tour.

The company will be offering full-time contracts and competitive wages, with preliminary auditions are being held in London this month by invitation only. Dancers are invited to apply emailing info@ballet.je with their CV and a recent video.

Ballet d’Jèrri is also counting on the support of Islanders and the wider international artistic community to establish Jersey’s place on the global dance stage, so are welcoming online donations via JustGiving.
