The five things I would change about Jersey are...

Friday 09 December 2016

Each week we have been asking Jersey folk what they would change to improve the Island...and Lauren Carré is next up. She is a PR/Marketing Fundraising Manager at Les Amis and is very proud to call Jersey her home.

Miss Carré is looking to the future and wants Jersey to invest in improving the Island for future generations.

  • Introduction of the Disability Legislation

Jersey is a wonderful place to work. The Disability Legislation needs to come in now so that workplace opportunities can be enjoyed by everyone. Sheltered and supported employment is beneficial for both the employees with disabilities and the organisation they join. It would show all islanders that people with disabilities are positive, contributing members of society.

  • Improvement in Mental Health Services

The rise in people suffering from mental health issues is staggering. More and more people are taking their lives. I believe less people would reach this point if Jersey had a better mental health service in place.

  • House Prices

As a 20 something-year-old the prospect of buying a house in Jersey is frankly daunting. Jersey is trying to encourage young people to come back to the island after university but one of the major deterrents is the price of houses. For many first-time buyers houses are simply out of price range and so they feel obliged to leave the island if they want to take their first step on the property ladder.

  • Invest in St. Ouen’s Social Scene

I have lived in St. Ouen my whole life and I love the parish. But, when I hear stories of the social scene back in my parent’s heyday I can’t help but feel that someone is missing a trick. I wouldn’t want developments to compromise the natural beauty of the five mile road but, especially in summer, I feel there is untapped potential. It would be excellent to see different clubs and bars that offer an alternative evening scene in Jersey so everything is not focused on town.

  • Time

This is a personal one. Jersey is a beautiful island not just in its natural beauty but with our rich history preserved in our heritage sites, the eclectic range of restaurants and the diversity of community activities. I wish I had more time to participate in community activities like the Battle of Flowers and St. Helier Angels and really enjoy our Island.
