Flood detection sensors to be installed in Grands Vaux homes

Friday 27 October 2023

Sensors capable of providing early flood detection warnings are to be installed in some Grands Vaux properties after a tech project proposed by Andium received grant funding.

Andium Homes' Realtime Sensor IoT Project is among the initiatives to have received funding from an open grant programme, which forms part of the Digital Jersey-run Impact Jersey scheme.

The first wave of beneficiaries from the programme, which offered applicants the opportunity to be awarded up to £75,000 to develop tech-driven solutions across a wide range of topics, were announced earlier this month.

Andium's pilot programme will see sensors installed in ten homes – including some properties in Grands Vaux, which was hit with major flooding at the start of the year.

The sensors are designed to help optimise energy consumption, monitor indoor air quality and, in the case of Grands Vaux, provide early flood detection warnings.

Work on the project is due to start within the next few weeks, with the aim of it being completed within a year.

Ian Crocker, Andium's Digital Lead, said: "The grant allows us to deliver innovative solutions for our clients, who make up 10% of the island's population.

"In collaboration with a local technology partner, this pilot aims to gain insights into how our homes perform."

He added: "The objective is to enhance energy efficiency, air quality, and prevent dampness whilst also implementing early flood detection. We are dedicated to the sustainability and well-being of our clients and the island community."
