A local cancer charity has launched a new initiative which will see several suncream stations placed along Jersey’s coast to encourage islanders to protect themselves against the sun.
The 'Sun Awareness' initiative has been launched this July by Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey to help decrease the risk of melanomas and other skin cancers amongst islanders.
The funding for this pilot scheme came from the money left to Macmillan Jersey by the Donna Annand Melanoma charity – who hosted mole clinics and provided extensive information regarding skin cancer in Jersey for 10 years – after the charity deregistered last year.
Donna's mother, Rosemary Le Saint said: "We are delighted with the way Macmillan Jersey are using the proceeds of Donna Annand Melanoma charity to continue the essential work of raising awareness of skin cancer in Jersey.
"We wholeheartedly support and endorse Macmillan Jersey’s campaign which continues Donna's legacy on this important issue."
Kevin Alway, Macmillan Jersey's Operations Lead, added: “By providing islanders with greater knowledge around skin cancers, the steps we should take to reduce the risk of these cancers, and knowledge regarding signs and symptoms we hope people will be ‘Sun Safe’ this Summer.
"We are also fully aware that with a cost-of-living crisis; some families may be unable to purchase suncream and enjoy Jersey’s wonderful beaches safely."
He added: "With the sun stations being placed around Jersey’s coastline, we hope anyone from our island or visiting will utilise these whilst learning more about the early prevention of skin cancers and the services on offer to anyone in Jersey affected by cancer provided by our charity."
As part of the 'Sun Awareness' pilot, Macmillan Jersey would like to hear from companies, groups and corporates who may wish for a suncream unit themselves.
