Islanders urged to "support charities this New Year" amid rising costs

Tuesday 09 January 2024

Jersey's only independent domestic abuse charity is urging islanders to "think about the way that they could make a difference this year" as charities face increasing costs for providing essential services to vulnerable islanders.

In the spirit of the new year, Freeda (formerly Jersey Women’s Refuge) is asking the public to "give back" in a variety of ways – through financial donations, volunteering support, spreading awareness, and attending its inaugural ‘Fundraising Gala’ on 17 February.

Funds raised from the gala – which includes a night of entertainment, meal and charity auction – will help support to the work of Freeda.

This includes the essential running of their newly-opened safehouse, the provision of emotional and practical support to women and children affected by domestic abuse, and preventative work undertaken in the community.

It will also celebrate the charity's growth over the past 35 years – from Jersey Women's Refuge being the only safehouse for those experiencing domestic abuse on the island to 2023's rebrand to 'Freeda: Free from Domestic Abuse' in order to reflect the breadth of preventative work the charity undertakes.

The charity's chief executive Lisa Leventhal said: "As we're a week into giving up chocolate, a new gym goal or taking part in dry January, we're asking islanders to think about the way that they could make a difference this year.

"It's been a tough few years for charities who provide essential services to our most vulnerable islanders, and Jersey's community spirit is ever more important.

"We're an affluent island with many generous individuals and businesses. Monetary contributions play a crucial role in sustaining essential services and even small donations can make a meaningful impact.

"As well as Freeda’s incredible staff, we’re lucky to work with a team of volunteers to deliver legal and financial advice to service users and provide their professional skills in a multitude of areas.

"If you have skills in marketing, events, fundraising, then there are many charities who may like to hear from you.

"If you are considering how you as an individual, or your business or workplace might want to support charities, we’re always happy to advise.

"Our operation revolves around ensuring that the women in our care have their practical and emotional needs met, which comes at a worth-while cost."

Tickets for the gala, which cost £90, are available HERE.

FREEDA offers a confidential service which offers support and advice to victims of domestic abuse 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The helpline can be reached at 0800 7356836.
