A group of islanders passionate about supporting working horses, donkeys and mules around the world is celebrating hitting a £400,000 fundraising milestone.
The team have been organising events for equine charity Brooke for 21 years – the latest being a Handbags and Glad Rags in June at St. Bernadette’s Church Hall in St. Brelade.
The latest fundraising effort was led by Mary Gaiger, who said: “Donkeys are hardworking stoic animals who rarely complain and therefore do not always receive the care and attention they need.”
She added that after visiting Brooke’s work in Egypt and India, she had been “spurred on to raise as much awareness and funds as possible”.
Customers at the Jersey sale were able to rifle through 18 racks of women’s clothes, jewellery and shoes – with the selection ranging from luxury to high street fashion.

This money goes towards the charity’s work on animal welfare and health across the world, as well as advocacy – for example opposing the sale of donkey skin.
The Jersey group’s fundraising focuses on raising awareness of donkey welfare issues, as these animals often work in difficult conditions.
Horses, donkeys and mules are often used for hard physical work, carrying heavy loads during long hours.
