Gas prices going up

Wednesday 27 August 2014

Warmer weather in Jersey over the last few years has pushed up gas prices in the Island and it will soon cost you more to heat your home.

From next month Jersey Gas is putting up its prices by 2.9% - an extra 10 pence a day for most people with gas fired central heating.

Group Managing director of parent company International Energy Group Tony Nicholls said: “The business has financially underperformed against the average of acceptable returns over the last few years. This under performance has been due to below average gas consumption as a direct result of warmer than average weather patterns that have been experienced in Jersey.

"The business has struggled to achieve the necessary levels of output over recent years and this small price increase will go some way to returning the business towards the average of the acceptable returns and importantly ensure that the business remains well placed to continue to provide the necessary investment in infrastructure and operations to deliver a quality and reliable service to our customers.”

Prices last went up by 3.5% in August 2013 and the company says it was able to maintain tariffs for over 12 months without any increase.

There will also be a 1.6% or 0.53 pence per day increase in the standing charge to cover the cost of providing connections to the gas supply.
