Genuine Jersey welcomes 5 fresh members

Sunday 28 July 2019

Five new artists and businesses have joined Genuine Jersey: local artists Jo Logue, Claire Haithwaite and Janet Conneely along with the businesses Paw-some Treats and Silver Stitch have been granted the local hallmark for their work.

Over 200 businesses and sole-traders currently hold the Genuine Jersey mark.

The Chief Executive of Genuine Jersey, John Garton was quick to congratulate them: “Applicants are judged on their use of local materials, the manufacturing process or growing/rearing of products and the skillset carried out by a resident in bringing these to market. This criteria ensures that everything that bears the Genuine Jersey hallmark is of Jersey provenance and of an exceptionally high level of quality”.

Janet Conneely produces sculptures made from metal and wire, and Jo Logue produces specially painted pebbles and scallop shells.

Jo Logue revived her love for painting in 2017 and began painting mandala pebbles for loved-ones and close friends. She has since gone on to offer her products as gifts to members of the public at various pop-up events year-round.

Jo has set up ‘Herd of Jersey’, an initiative where pebbles showing the Jersey cow are taken to various locations all over the globe, she said: “The 200 that I have painted so far have been photographed in places as far away as Indonesia, China, Ecuador and Australia.”

Claire Haithwaite moved back to Jersey just five years ago after living in Amsterdam for 19 years, a place which she says inspired her creative style. Cornwall-based artist Bernard Leach was also a large factor in Claire’s development into ceramics from other inventive hobbies.

Working from her home studio, she produces ceramic pots and vases.

Claire collects her clay in Grouville Bay, the almost two-week process to sieve and settle the clay then begins. Claire then creates her high-end ceramics which can be purchased from her studio or at featured markets later in the year.

Paw-some treats is run by Jill Underwood with the business producing a range of cookies, biscuits, muffins, birthdays cakes and personalised goodie bags for dogs. Jill thought to start producing her treats after her dog Theo and a friend’s dog became limited in terms of the treats they could eat due to allergies.

The treats produced have gluten-free, lactose-free and vegan options, with the treats adhering to many dog’s preferences.

Jessica Silver started producing fashionable and affordable clothing for young children once she realised her hobby of sewing clothes for her new-born child could be turned into a business. Her clothes are suited specifically for infants, with the clothes made to order by appointment and on display at the Harbour gallery.

Jessica has stated how she is “really excited by the opportunities it (the Genuine Jersey tag) will offer my business to get to that next level”.
