Genuine Jersey 'sauces' some new members

Monday 10 August 2015

A quilter, a baker and two caramel sauce makers have been given a real Jersey seal of approval.

Annie Fenwick and Shelly Dodds who set up La Crémière, Jenny Norman – the fabric behind Crafty Quilters and Darren Wallser – the vital ingredient in Daz’s Dough are the latest creative talent to join Genuine Jersey.

There are now over 170 local members in the Association – all producing goods that are either reared, grown or caught in Jersey or created by accredited Islanders and local businesses.

Keen foodies - Annie, who was co-founder and a former owner of Feast Restaurant in Gorey, selling her share in 2013, and Shelly who is a qualified nanny, have been whipping up a storm with Jersey cream and butter. Their first product is La Crémière Salted Caramel Sauce which also includes Jersey sea salt. They've sold over 1,000 jars of the stuff since launching it at the beginning of last month and their Jersey Salted Caramel, Espresso Salted Caramel and Rosemary Salted Caramel has been flying off the shelves in La Belle Gourmand, the Fresh Fish Company, Midland Stores, Gorey Village Fruit Shop, Relish, Dunell's at Beaumont and La Cave, Cocorico in Broad Street and the Central Market, and Fungi Delecti.

As a child, Jenny was inspired by two of her aunties who were both crafty and has always dreamed of starting her own haberdashery business. She sells a wide range of fabrics, quilts, crochet baby blankets, dresses and bags through her website www.craftyquiltersonline.com and is about to open a small shop in Upper Midvale Road.

Darren is a self-taught baker who's hobby baking artisan sourdough bread at home has given rise to a new career. Daz's Dough now supplies the Fresh Fish Company with sourdough loaves and mini baguettes and his breads are also used by Relish, The Bastille Tavern and Flavour.je.

He makes a range of breads, including white sourdough, mini sourdough baguettes, soda bread, farmhouse and granary loaves, focaccia with various toppings and granary party breads.

He's just finished a course on running a micro-bakery making sourdough and hopes to open his own bakery and learn how to bake traditional Jersey bread.
