Premier League teams set sights on 'Guernsey Grealish'

Monday 28 February 2022

A host of Premier League football clubs are said to be interested in signing Guernsey man Alex Scott this summer.

National and regional media are reporting that Leicester City, Everton and West Ham United are among the clubs considering making bids for the 18-year-old dubbed the 'Guernsey Grealish' when the season finishes in May.

Scott currently plays for Bristol City in the Championship - one division below the Premier League. City are owned by billionaire Guernsey resident Stephen Lansdown.

They recently posted annual pre-tax losses of £38m and may be unable to resist lucrative offers from Premier League clubs for their best players.

Scott is under contract with City until 2025, which is likely to maximise his value in this summer's transfer market.

Scott broke into City's first team last season.

He has established himself as one of their best players this season, winning himself a regular place in their starting XI, including for Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, and he is now a firm favourite with City's fans.

Before that match at the weekend, the Mail reported: "West Ham’s interest in Scott has emerged, while Everton and Leicester have also been linked, but Sportsmail understands they are far from his only admirers with the list lengthy. City games this season have been swamped with scouts from the top flight’s biggest sides down plus continental clubs all running the rule over Scott."

Tottenham Hotspur are also reported to have sent their senior scout, Peter Braund, to Ashton Gate, Bristol City's ground, to check out Scott ahead of the possibility that he may be ready to step up to a Premier League club next season.

Scott is already part of England's under-19 set-up.

His manager at Bristol City, Nigel Pearson, has tipped the youngster one day to play for England's senior national team.

Scott's quality is supplemented by his versatility. Primarily an attacking midfielder, he has also impressed as a wing-back, right-sided and central midfielder and in a more defensive holding midfield position.

He was shortlisted for this year's Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year award, but was pipped to the top spot by Jersey cricket captain Charles 'Chuggy' Perchard.
