WATCH: Jersey-born musician releases first music video

A Jersey-born musician who recently featured on a Spotify playlist with hundreds-of-thousands of listeners has teamed up with a fellow islander to release his first music video.

Singer-songwriter Harrison Mayo left the island at the age of 12 to attend a performing arts school in the UK, where he studied for four years before moving to London.

The 26-year-old artist works multiple jobs – including as a brand ambassador for Facebook technology company Meta, and as a host in a premium suite at the O2 – while he pursues his music career.

He recently released his new song 'My Time', as well as his first ever music video directed by Toby Norman – a cinematographer who is also from Jersey.

Watch: Harrison Mayo's new song also saw the creation of his first ever music video.

Harrison said: "It was a really cool experience and came around very naturally."

He explained how he had ended up collaborating with Toby to create the his music video.

"For context, our parents had known each other for a while (as Jersey is) and we both went to Vic [Victoria College], but Toby was a few years below me and we didn't really speak at all.

"Once he moved to London and knew I was also living there, he reached out to me on Instagram and said we should meet up and just film some stuff for fun and see what happens."

Harrison added: "I was very open to that idea as I love experimenting and seeing where it goes, so we met up for a drink on the Southbank first and had a chat about all the years that had passed and what we've been up to, and then we began planning the video for 'My Time'.

"A couple of months later here we are, my first music video completed and directed by Mr Toby Norman himself."

The "most nerve-wracking experience"

Harrison's most recent show was the end of last year at a venue called the 'Jazz Cafe', supporting an R&B artist from Los Angeles called T.A Thomas.

"It was easily the best and most nerve-wracking experience of my musical career," said Harrison.

"Imagine the whole venue was sold out and it’s the most people I’ve ever performed my original music to.

"The love and feedback afterwards was amazing and some great opportunities have blossomed off the back of it, I cant wait for more of that this year."

The singer has also been featured on two editorial playlists on Spotify.

One of them, 'New Music Friday', is followed by more than 800,000 people, while the other – called 'Fresh Finds U.K & Ireland'  is made for independent artists.

"It’s important that I stay consistent"

"Getting on one is hard enough, so I'm so happy and grateful for the fact they’ve put me on any," Harrison explained.

"I only found out on the day of the song coming out because someone messaged me, who I didn’t know, saying they heard the song on New Music Friday and they really loved the sound of my voice and wanted to know if I had more music coming soon!

"It has boosted the stream numbers slightly, but more than anything it has boosted the quality of listeners on my Spotify, so from being added to that playlist, I can see over 70% of people that have listened once have added it to their own personal playlist.

"If anything, it just gives you and your music catalogue more exposure going forward. So it’s important I stay consistent now."
