A free bowel cancer screening programme for the over 60’s is up for a national award.

Proving it’s a leader in its field, the Health department has been shortlisted in two categories in the 2014 Health Service Journal (SHJ) Value in Healthcare Awards for the service which it set up in January last year.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Susan Turnbull said: “This is excellent news for Jersey. It signifies that we rank highly when compared to other organisations across the NHS who entered these awards.

“The whole team involved in the bowel screening programme have certainly striven hard to ensure a high standard of service for clients and, since the service began, they’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who have attended for screening. To be short-listed, not only once, but in two different categories for a national award is great recognition to staff for a job well done and rightly deserved”.

This month members of the team involved in the programme will be judged on their presentations by two different panels for “Value and Improvement in the use of Diagnostics” and “Value and Improvement in Communication”.

The Awards seek to recognise and reward outstanding efficiency and improvement in healthcare and looks for examples of better outcomes for clinical initiatives.

Deputy Editor of HSJ Emma Maier said: “I am delighted to announce the shortlist for the HSJ Value Awards 2014. Being short-listed means that an organisation has been specifically chosen as a leader in its field, achieving both service improvement and outstanding efficiency – a vital balance that is more important than ever before.”

The award ceremony is at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 23 September.
