Hunt is on for Liberation poets

Sunday 01 March 2015

Can you come up with a rhyme to mark an important time in Jersey’s history?

Islanders are being encouraged to write a winning poem that will be read out on 9 May as part of the official programme of events to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Island’s Liberation from Occupation.

The States have been working with the Jersey Arts Trust to launch the competition and hope to see people exploring a range of subjects like what it would have been like to be part of the Liberation Day celebrations seventy years ago and the importance of Liberation in the 21st Century.

The Bailiff, William Bailhache, said: “I hope that Islanders will seize the opportunity to put in to words their thoughts, and perhaps even personal experiences, about this special event in our history, namely the 70th Anniversary of Liberation on 9 May 2015.”

The competition will be judged in three age categories: 7–11 year-olds, 12-17 year-olds and over 18s.

The winners will also get a Kindle Reader and there’s £50 worth of book vouchers up for grabs for the second-prize winners. The prize winners’ schools will also get £250 in book vouchers.

You have until Thursday 2 April to get your poem in before the winners are announced on Monday 24 April.

Application forms are available from the Jersey Arts Trust offices at 3 Charles Street, Waterstones, Jersey Library and the Town Hall.
