An islander has been taken to hospital after attempting to tackle a blaze that broke out in their flat in the early hours of this morning.
Neighbours dialled 999 after spotting flames at 03:18 and two fire engines carrying 10 firefighting staff were sent to the area.
When the fire broke out, the occupier had tried to put it out by themselves using a foam extinguisher, but suffered injuries from smoke inhalation as a result.
Paramedics had to treat them when they arrived, and they were soon after taken to hospital.
It took two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus using a hose reel and thermal imaging camera to bring the fire under control.
The town-based crew said afterwards that the property suffered "considerable smoke damage" and that belongings inside were left "smouldering".
After investigating, they said they believed a small electric heater was the most likely cause of the fire.
This morning, the Fire Service told islanders: "Watch Commander Ryan would like to emphasise to the public not to tackle a fire yourself instead GET OUT, STAY OUT and call 999."
