Islanders invited to join final Jayson Lee memorial run

Monday 05 August 2024

The final Jayson Lee memorial run is set to take place later this month in memory of a local policeman who died over 15 years ago.

Jayson Lee died suddenly at the age of 39 while playing for St John's football team in 2009.

In his memory, his brother Brenton organised the Jayson Lee 10k run as a fundraiser.

Over the past 15 years, the event has become a firm fixture in Jersey's annual running calendar.

However, Jayson's family have announced that 2024 will be the 16th and final year of the memorial run – and would like as many people as possible to sign up.

Raising money for Jersey Hospice Care, this year's event will be held on Sunday 25 August, which would have been Jayson's 54th birthday.

The course leads runners past Jayson's home, his school, La Hocq slip  where he used to take his sons for bacon rolls – and his final resting place.

It is a run rather than a race, so all abilities are welcome, and everyone who crosses the finish line will receive a medal.

There will also be awards for the first 10 men and women over the line, as well as spot prizes.

Jayson’s mum Margaret Lee said: “We, as a family, have made the difficult decision to make this the final memorial run.

When Brenton organised the first run, he thought it would be a one-off  but everyone enjoyed it so much they said, we can’t wait for next year!’ and here we are 15 years later putting on the last Jayson Lee 10k Memorial Run!

She continued: "Were proud our run has become a firm fixture in the running calendar and proud to have raised more than £90,000 for Hospice.

"For the family its a very emotional day and it’s becoming harder every year. This year the run is on Jayson’s 54th birthday, so it’s a very fitting date to finish our run.

"The support from the running community and our generous volunteers has made it all possible – and as a family, we would like to thank you all for your continued help.”

The run is sponsored by Mitchell Building Contractors, Mark Pickford's Cycle Shop and Lab-6.

It will begin at 09:00 on Sunday 25 August at FB Fields.
