Islanders heed Police “don’t drink and drive” message

Tuesday 03 January 2017

There’s been a dramatic drop in the number of drink-drivers over the festive period.

Almost 4,000 people were stopped over the Christmas/New Year period and just over 100 were breathalysed.

Of those two have been charged – one was two times over the prescribed limit. Another driver is awaiting the results of a blood test. Two of the three were involved in crashes.

In 2014 12 people were prosecuted for drink driving over the holiday period, and in 2015 nine.

Inspector Sara Garwood said: “At the start of this campaign we asked for the public’s help in providing information on those who chose to drink and drive, putting us all at risk. We would like to thank them for their support in providing us with information, and also for the positive feedback when being stopped in the many road checks.”

States Police and the Honoraries will be continuing to target drink driving in 2017. Plans are also in train to lower the legal drink drive limit.
