Islanders have smashed a target to raise £3,000 for families left homeless by a fire in St. Aubin in just 24 hours, with many also donating clothes and goods.
A blaze broke out in the middle flat of a property on Market Hill just before 03:00 on Tuesday.
The building was quickly evacuated as firefighters tended to the blaze, and no islanders were injured, but a cat belonging to a retired couple living in the top flat died, and their other cat was treated at the vets.
The Parish of St. Brelade helped to accommodate the affected families for the night, and said that those affected had since received several offers for longer term options.

St. Brelade Deputy Montfort Tadier set up a fundraiser for those affected by the blaze with a fundraising target of £3,000.
“I am sure that our hearts go out to the people who have been made homeless as a result of the fire last night at St. Aubin,” he said.
“It would be great if we could, as a community, do a little something to make their Christmas a little better.”
It smashed its target within 24 hours and, at the time of writing, the fundraising pot currently stands at £3,400.
Many islanders and charitable organisations, including St. Aubin-based Love Thy Neighbour and the Salvation Army, have also stepped in to lend goods, clothing and a helping hand.
