Police stop almost 2,000 drivers - but only six fail the breathalyser

Police have arrested six people for drink driving so far this Christmas.

Officers and honorary police have been out on the roads in force checking up on drivers and have stopped 1,866 people since the start of the month.

A dozen people were arrested for driving while over the limit during the festive period last year but the police message seems to be hitting home as that’s almost half the number of people arrested for it in 2011.

Inspector Paul Smith who’s leading the campaign said: “If you’re caught you face a heavy fine and driving ban, or even worse hurting yourself or others in a collision.

“Alcohol is a depressant tending to make you feel over- confident, slowing down the brain and affecting the body’s responses. Why would anyone think it safe, or fair to gamble with the lives of others? No one has the right to put our families and friends at risk by mixing alcohol or drugs with driving.”

Officers have scaled down the campaign as officers search for missing 20-year-old Adrian Lynch but still want to hear from you if you know anyone getting behind the wheel after one too many. You can call them on 612612 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Their annual Drink Drive campaign runs until the end of the month.
