A pub crawl with a historic twist

Saturday 05 September 2020

Islanders are being invited to join a 'pub crawl' with a historic twist.

Jersey Heritage’s popular series of pub talks, Heritage on Tap, has been transformed into a series of self-guided walks this year to ensure it can continue under official covid guidelines.

Heritage on Tap is part of the ‘What’s Your Street’s Story?’ programme that runs every September.

The events usually attract up to 100 people, who happily pack into a chosen pub to listen to Jersey Archive staff sharing stories about the history of the area.

In this updated version, the talks won't take place in a pub - but will start and finish there instead.

Lucy Layton, Jersey Heritage’s Outreach Curator, explainedt: “Heritage on Tap always proves to be a favourite with Islanders, who love to listen to stories of the area surrounding a particular pub – often an area they live in. We’ve been busy thinking about how we could keep the series going safely in the current situation and we think we’ve found the ideal solution with the self-guided walks, which start and end at a popular pub.

Each walk, whose routes are featured on a dedicated website which will be updated weekly, is scheduled to take between 30 and 45 minutes, and all have the option of a drink at the local pub, either before or after the walk.

The starting points for the walks listed so far are St Mary’s Country Inn, The Dolphin in Gorey, The White Horse at Havre des Pas and the Old Court House in St. Aubin.

Avid walkers will be pleased to learn that this week also brings the start of the National Trust's Walking Through Autumn Festival.

From 9 to 13 September, islanders will be invited to take part in 26 walks in National Trust lands and properties ranging from Grouville Marsh to St. Ouen's pond.

Themed walks based around wildlife and wellness are also on the agenda.

Donna Le Marrec. Marketing and Events Manager for The National Trust in Jersey said: “We’re fortunate to have many wonderful sites and buildings in our care and what better way to enjoy them, but with a walking festival.  Each walk is led by a Blue Badge Guide, specialist or by one of our Lands Team and is tailored to a specific area or site.

"What sets this festival aside, is the opportunity to experience ‘behind the scenes’ such as access to a particular site or to access somewhere not normally available to the public.  We’re very grateful for Jersey Water’s support, as without them this activity wouldn’t be possible."
