Jersey refs score chance to officiate Bulls games

Sunday 03 November 2019

Jersey referees have scored a new opportunity to officiate upcoming Jersey Bulls matches.

The Jersey FA branch and the Football Association itself have made it possible for locally-based officials to referee Bulls fixtures, rather than flying in refs from the UK.

Up until this point, all officials for the Bulls home games at Springfield Stadium have travelled from England – incurring significant travel and accommodation costs.

Andy Norman and JFA Referee Development Officer David Brunton are the first Jersey refs in the middle for Bulls’ games this month.

Commenting on the scheme, Mr Norman said: “I think it’s important for local referees to be able to see there is a development pathway.

“Just like many players aspire to test themselves at the top level possible, on- or off-island, referees are no different and I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”

Mr Norman was the referee for the Bulls’ match against Dorking Wanderers Reserve yesterday (Saturday 2 November) and Mr Brunton is set to officiate the 23 November game when the Bulls host the Cove team.

CEO of the Jersey FA, Jean-Luc Desbois, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for our referees and demonstrates the JFA’s commitment to developing a pathway for local match officials.

“Jersey has quality referees and it’s important that we continue to find opportunities for them.”

It’s also hoped that local referees will also be invited over to England to officiate fixtures in the Combined Counties Leagues.
