Jersey Royals… in January?!

Friday 25 January 2019

The week might have started with 'Blue Monday', but it finishes with a very early sign that spring might just....finally...be on the way.

The first Jersey Royals of the year have been lifted in St.Ouen this week, and although they are part of an indoor crop, it's a very early taste of what spring has in store, to help banish the winter blues.

The spuds were planted in the greenhouse before Christmas and a sample dig to see how they're developing has retrieved some “promising” results.

William Church, Director of Sales and Marketing at the farm, told Express: “Whilst most focus is currently on planting the outdoor Jersey Royal crop, the indoor potatoes planted before Christmas have been growing well, boosted by relatively mild temperatures.

“Today a sample dig was taken from one of the crops in a greenhouse in St. Ouen to assess the size, yield and quality, and the results are promising. The first exports are likely to leave the island within the next three to four weeks.”
