Island's sporting heroes to go down in history

Sunday 16 September 2018

Jersey sporting legends from past and present will get the kudos they deserve after Jersey Sport unveiled plans for a “hall of fame” and new awards ceremony.

Five local sporting heroes will be inducted into the hall of fame and young stars will have the opportunity to win various awards for their year’s performances as part of the 'RaceNation Sport and Active Living Awards'.

The presentation will be held at the new gala dinner at the Royal Yacht Hotel on Thursday 8 November starting at 18:30.

The nine awards on offer will be: sporting performance of the year, sporting performance of the year (U21s), sports organisation of the year, manager/coach of the year, volunteer of the year, active school award, active workplace award, active living group of the year and the lifetime achievement award.

Jersey Sport chairman Phil Austin believes it is only right we recognise the achievements of our islands athletes and teams both past and present.

“It’s been another brilliant year or so of sport from Gotland to the Gold coast and there are plenty of nearer-to-home success stories to celebrate too. Meanwhile, we also want to highlight and reward the schemes, schools and organisations which promote healthy living on our island," he said.

“We think that earning a place in the Hall of Fame will become a particularly prestigious accolade for the inductees, and we’re looking forward to celebrating some of the brilliant achievements from islanders and local groups.”

Nominations will be put forward by members of the public for all of the awards including the Hall of Fame, but the final decision will be made by a panel of judges made up of senior figures involved in island sport.

Sports technology company RaceNation will be sponsoring the event and company director Will Golder has said it could not be a more fitting event for them to sponsor, due to the their roots being based firmly on this island.

Jersey Sport are also looking for sponsors for the award categories and urge any company interested to get in contact with them.
