Islanders evacuated from homes during late night kitchen blaze

Monday 13 December 2021

More than a dozen people had to be evacuated from their homes after a fire broke out in a basement flat’s kitchen.

Firefighters were called out shortly after 22:00 last night to deal with the blaze on the lower part of Queen's Road, which was closed in both directions.

It took two trucks with nine firefighters to get the fire under control.

In the end, two firefighters, who entered the flat wearing breathing gear, managed to extinguish it with a high-pressure hose real, and the road was then re-opened.

No one was hurt during the blaze.

Watch Commander Richard Ryan has since praised the owner and neighbours for their quick thinking in dialling 999 and evacuating 14 people from the property.

“The incident shows the upmost importance of having a working smoke detector in your property and the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service's key advice of: ‘GET OUT, STAY OUT, GET THE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE OUT'," he said.

Firefighters are continuing to urge people to be cautious over the Christmas period and have issued advice to help everyone stay safe.

Top 10 festive fire safety tips...

  1. Make sure you have a working smoke alarm and check it weekly.

  2. Make a fire action plan so that everyone knows how to escape if there's a fire.

  3. Check that your fairy lights conform to the British Standard (BS EN 60598) and aren't faulty.

  4. Turn off your tree lights and shut all your doors before you go out or go to bed.

  5. Make sure outside lights are designed for that purpose and connect them through a residual current device (RCD).

  6. Stick to the rule ‘one socket, one plug’. Only use ‘strip’-type adaptors; block adaptors are too heavy for the socket.

  7. Never put candles near your tree, furnishings or decorations; don't leave them burning unattended and don’t attach decorations to lights and heaters.

  8. Don't drink and cook; consider getting a takeaway or stock up with some ‘easy’ snacks.

  9. Put cigarettes out properly and never smoke in bed; keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children.

  10. Visit less able friends, relatives and neighbours to make sure they are safe and sound.

ALWAYS remember: do not try to tackle a fire. Get out, stay out and call 999.
