Islanders given rare chance to ride the Airport runway

Sunday 07 January 2018

If you have always wanted to dash across Jersey Airport's runway on your bicycle, you better be quick.

There are only 100 spaces available to take part in a charity cycle along the 1,706-metre runway on 14 January and they are going fast.

The fundraiser is in aid of local charities, which include Ports of Jersey's nominated charities for 2018, Holiday for Heroes Jersey, Jersey Cancer Relief, Jersey Children's Charity and Philip's Footprints.

Runway events at Jersey Airport are strictly limited, with only a handful of them taking place each year, including one cycle event, one running event and one skating or other wheeled event.

With limited places available in each event, the team at Ports of Jersey says this may be your only chance to ‘Ride the Runway’ in 2018.

The ‘Ride the Runway’ event, which is open to everyone over the age of nine years will take place on the 1,706 metre runway early morning on 14 January 2018. Participants will need to arrive by 06:15 to start promptly at 06:45. All participants will be required to have a roadworthy bike and helmet to take part.

Participants can register online before 12 January or until spaces run out and are asked to donate £32. The event is limited to 100 participants and available on a first-come basis.

Cycling as a group, the runway riders will follow a specially marked route, which will take approximately half an hour. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult. The entrance fee includes refreshments.
