Want to send a letter to a lost loved one?

Islanders who wish to share some special words with a loved one who has passed away are being invited to use a new 'Letterbox to Heaven'.

Following a distinctive white respray, a former Jersey Post collection box has been installed at Jersey Crematorium, with an open invitation to anyone wanting to remember an absent friend or relative on a birthday or anniversary to drop off a card or letter.

Assistant Health and Social Security Minister Malcolm Ferey said the idea followed successful schemes elsewhere.

He said: "It’s a lovely initiative which started in the UK, so those who are grieving can put their thoughts and feelings down in a letter or card. It’s very cathartic."

He continued: "Anyone can pop up to the lovely surroundings of the memorial garden at Westmount and post their letter.’ Deputy Ferey said any letters or cards posted would be treated with confidence and respect.

"Only Crem staff will have the key to the box. It will be opened and emptied periodically and the contents securely disposed of, so people can be assured their letters won’t ever be opened or read."
