Lucky escape for St. Helier family

A St. Helier family had a lucky escape last night after a fire threatened their home.

It was part of a busy evening for firefighters as another crew had to go to La Rue du Pont in St. John where another fire destroyed a 75 by 30 metre open area of grass before being extinguished.

When the firefighters arrived on scene, the fire was beginning to spread further due to the wind. Four firefighters got to work but asked for backup - with extra water supplies, the blaze was eventually brought under control.

While a crew was busy tackling that fire, their colleagues were called to another blaze outside a St. Helier house. 

All of the remaining full-time firefighters were sent to this fire, and the on-call duty crew were also summoned from home.

When they got there the crew were faced with an outside fire that was beginning to head towards the house.

The family had got out through the far side of the property, which meant the fire crew were able to concentrate on the fire and didn't have to search for possible casualties.

The blaze was brought under control quickly with a water jet by a team wearing breathing apparatus. It only caused minor damage to the property.  

With the warm weather and dry conditions set to continue, Watch Commander Ryan is reminding islanders to take extra care when disposing of flammable materials.
