Man in critical condition after gas explosion

Sunday 24 September 2017

A 40-year-old man is in a critical condition after a gas leak caused an explosion and fire at a farmhouse in St Clement.

Two other casualties also needed treatment. One – a 26-year-old woman was treated at the hospital for burns, and the other treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The Fire Service received the call very early on Saturday morning and say “the fire was out on arrival but there was extensive damage to the property. The roof tiles had been blown off and windows had been blown out by the pressure wave of the explosion and also internally there was extensive damage.”

Jersey Gas employees also attended the incident and helped make the property safe. Investigations are continuing, and although the cause is still not clear, Jersey Gas are reminding people of the importance of having all internal gas pipe work, installations and appliances checked annually by competent gas engineers. They say also say if you smell gas at any time, you should report it to them on their emergency telephone line 755555.
