"Critical" man who fell down Bonne Nuit cliffs transferred to Southampton

Thursday 17 May 2018

A worker who fell 80 feet down the cliffs at Bonne Nuit has been transferred to Southampton General Hospital.

The police said that the man, who hurt his head, back and leg in the fall, remains critical but stable.

A joint operation involving more than 30 staff from the Emergency Services was launched to rescue the man yesterday morning.

Fire fighters arrived just after 09:00 and lowered a paramedic down to the man using ropes, to assess the man's injuries .

They say that because of his condition, they decided to lower him on down to Bonne Nuit, where the Fire Service's Inshore Rescue boat, and the RNLI were waiting to take him to the slip, and an ambulance could pick him up. The incident is now being investigated by both the Police and Health and Safety officials.

Watch Commander Richard Ryan said “At the height of the incident over 30 emergency personnel were utilised and demonstrated all emergency services working together to achieve the best possible outcome. He would also like to remind people when working at height at home or in the workplace to insure it is safe to do so by utilizing safety rails or work restraint harnesses."
