Menopause support sessions to encourage "honest conversation"

Sunday 04 February 2024

Women going through the menopause will soon be able to attend a free weekly session offering a “safe space” to discuss and share their experience.

The Listening Lounge, which aims to support Islanders with their mental health and wellbeing, has launched a “shared experience women’s group” starting later this month.

The group will meet for six weeks on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7.30pm, with the first session on 20 February.

In a statement posted to social media, the organisation wrote: "[We] are launching a shared experience women's group, offering a safe space to discuss all things relating to menopause."

Lucy Nicolaou, Service Lead for the Listening Lounge, said: "There has been an increase in the number of people discussing symptoms of menopause, perhaps in relation to anxiety or low mood or difficulty sleeping or affecting their relationships, or people talking about their experiences in the workplace.

"We recognised it would be helpful to introduce a group that would bring women together and provide a safe space for honest conversation relating to the menopause."

She continued: "Each week there will be different topics put to the group to discuss, such as symptoms, management of them, body changes, medical interventions and healthcare, emotional welling and self care, and relationships and support networks."

She added that the six-week group would operate on a rolling basis and that the number of places would depend upon the level of interest, but that the Lounge would try to accommodate everyone who was interested.
