Meet the cast: Who will be starring in the Bergerac reboot?

Monday 08 July 2024

A 'hot plumber' from Derry Girls has been cast as Jersey detective Jim Bergerac in a reboot of the iconic 1980s TV series – and is set to star alongside two other well-known TV stars.

Here's a rundown of each cast member announced so far – and where you might recognise them from...

Jim Bergerac

Damien Molony will star as the reimagined Jim Bergerac, who was originally portrayed on-screen by John Nettles.

Molony first appeared on screens in BBC Three’s Being Human in 2012, before going on to star in Phoebe Waller Bridge’s Crashing, Roisin Conaty’s GameFace, Sky One comedy Brassic and British legal drama, The Split.

No stranger to investigative work, he was also DC Albert Flight in BBC’s Ripper Street and DS Jack Weston in Channel 5’s Suspects.

Most recently, he starred as 'hot plumber' Gabriel in acclaimed Channel 4 show Derry Girls.

But Molony's acting credits also extend on-screen, with a number of notable stage appearances.

"I’m incredibly excited to be stepping into the role of Jim Bergerac. John Nettles has left an incredible legacy with big shoes to fill, and I hope I can bring a fresh new take on this iconic character. I can't wait for audiences to join me on this journey," he said.

Charlie Hungerford

Zoe Wanamaker

In a twist on the original series, Zoë Wanamaker CBE will play the role of Jim's mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford.

Many will recognise Wanamaker from classic BBC sitcom My Family, where she starred alongside Robert Lindsay, as well as her iconic role as Madam Hooch in the film adaptation of the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.

The American-British actor has also worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and was made a CBE in the 2001 New Year Honours for services to drama.

Arthur Wakefield

Philip Glenister

Philip Glenister is making a return to the detective world by featuring in the new series, having previously captivated audiences as DCI Gene Hunt in BBC series Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes, in addition to starring as DCI William Bell in State of Play.

In more recent years, he has appeared in the likes of Belgravia, where he was the lead,  Inside No 9, and, most recently, After the Flood.

Other cast members

Pippa Haywood, who is best known for starring in Green Wing, has been cast as Margaret Heaton.

Robert Gilbert from Big Boys will take on the role of Barney Crozier, while Sasha Behar (Unforgotten) is Uma Dalal and Celine Arden (Us or Them) is Kara.

What will the first episode be about?

The synopsis teases: "Viewers will meet Jim Bergerac (Molony) as a broken man, grappling with grief and alcoholism following his wife’s recent death. His mother-in-law, Charlie (Wanamaker), is concerned Jim isn’t putting his daughter Kim first and, when a woman from a wealthy Jersey family is murdered, Jim must fight through his personal struggles to become the formidable investigator he once was.

"With a troublesome convict resurfacing from his past, Bergerac is required to call on his sharp investigative instincts and past successes to navigate the intricate family dynamics, and watchful eyes of the police force, in order to solve the case."
