Former award-winning paramedic sent to prison for sexual abuse

Monday 21 August 2023

A former paramedic who won awards for his long service and good conduct has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years for a string of sexual offences, including rape, against a "vulnerable" woman.

David Moody (59) admitted three counts of rape, two of sexual assault and one of sexual penetration without consent.

He appeared before the Bailiff in the Royal Court today, where he was handed the prison sentence.

Moody had a high-profile career as a paramedic and was praised for his work with the Ambulance Service over a 20-year period of employment.

He was on duty on the morning of 17 April 1995 when the vessel Channiland struck rocks off Corbière.

He also received acclaim in January 2008 for rescuing a pensioner from a fire, breaking down the door of a smoke-filled flat in Le Marais and helping the unconscious elderly man, who was suffering from smoke inhalation, out of the burning building to safety.

Moody later became a trainer in violence and aggression for the Health Department and was awarded the Ambulance Service long service and good conduct medals in 2009.

Moody was arrested in September 2022, and charged with 20 sexual offences in March this year. When he appeared in the Royal Court in June, he entered guilty pleas to six charges against a female victim referred to only as 'Miss X'. The offences were not committed while he was a paramedic.

The Royal Court heard that Moody threatened his victim, who was described as "vulnerable", so that she would not report the crimes.

His actions were said to have had a hugely traumatic effect on her. The woman is now being supported by Independent Sexual Violence Advisors.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Jo Le Maistre described the investigation as "long and complex", adding that Moody "tried to evade detection and justice by silencing his victim with threats, but I am relieved she has now been given a voice".

"We are committed to investigating and prosecuting all sexual offenders and want to assure victims that there are a number of agencies who are in a position to offer support and guidance through all stages of the criminal justice process," she continued.

In addition to being sentenced to imprisonment, Moody has been added to the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years and has been handed an indefinite restraining order.
