Jersey Police seem to be getting their anti-drink drive message across.
In the two weeks since they started their Christmas campaign over 2,500 vehicles have been stopped and 71 people have been breathalysed, but only two people are alleged to have broken the law.
The police say that, “...one person has been charged with failing to provide a sample of breath, and another was found to be over the drink drive limit."
The current drink drive limit is 80mg/ml of blood, but that could soon be reduced.
The Department of Infrastructure wants to bring Jersey in line with most of the rest of Europe and is suggesting a 50mg/ml limit from 2018. In Norway and Sweden the limit is 20mg/ml.
Last year there were 138 convictions for drink driving in the Island. The department say although the number of drink-drive injuries has fallen dramatically since the highs of the 70s and 80s, it is still one of the major causes of serious road accidents locally.
