New artists get the Genuine Jersey stamp of approval

Saturday 07 July 2018

Three new artists have joined the 170- strong Genuine Jersey community and will get support in developing their creative businesses.

Work sold by Kirsty Garcia, Laura Smillie and Anna Renouf of ‘Wonderlands’ can now display the Genuine Jersey stamp - a hallmark showing local provenance and high quality.

The Genuine Jersey label shows that produce has been reared, grown or caught in Jersey, or was crafted by islanders or local businesses who are Genuine Jersey members.

One of the new members is Kirsty Garcia, an experimental artist known for her vibrant and colourful artwork, inspired by nature and the world around her. Her creations were shown off at this year’s Skipton Open Studios – where she was a featured artist.

She said: “My goal is one day to open my own art studio to showcase my work and to support the local art community.”

Ms Garcia hopes that becoming part of the Genuine Jersey community will provide her with the support she needs to develop her business.

Last year, artist Laura Smillie (pictured left) set up her business from her home studio in St. Brelade, making hand crafted porcelain candle holders. She said: “Being self-employed and working from home can get very lonely at times.”

She thinks becoming a member will benefit her: “I’ve lots to learn about running a successful small business so it’s great to connect with other Genuine Jersey members to share our knowledge and experiences.”

Anna Renouf’s business ‘Wonderlands’ will also get the hallmark. She specialises in design and styling for brands, weddings and events. She has also been making handmade macramé plant hangers since discovering her love for the craft in 2016. Demand for her products increased so she decided to set up her own small business.
