New island business aims to make white weddings 'green'

Thursday 10 August 2023

A recent bride who wants to take the "fast fashion" element out of dress shopping has launched a new business that she hopes will help people across the Channel Islands have a greener wedding.

Evergreen Bridal Studio is the brainchild of Imogen Berryman.

Finding the options for wedding dresses in Guernsey "limiting and expensive", she decided to launch her own business, firstly as a pop-up. However, it has recently expanded into a permanent studio.

The average manufacture of one dress uses between 10,000 and 20,000 litres of water and emits 10kg to 20kg of carbon.

Imogen argues that the wedding dress industry is the definition of fast fashion and "extending the life of a dress that has already been made saves on emissions and water usage".

Since opening, Imogen says the response has been "wonderful", adding that customers had "welcomed removing the expense, and environmental impact, of flying off island for studio appointments, and the subsequent fittings".

"Seller-to-seller dress sites such as Still White are being used more, but with them comes the risk that the buyer cannot try before they buy, and it also misses the coveted experience of a private bridal studio experience that Evergreen offers," she continued.

"Seeing happy faces walk out the studio makes this so rewarding. I'm here to show that everyone can have a dress they love, that doesn't cost the Earth."

Evergreen Bridal also sells dresses on behalf of local charities, and brides who "no longer feel they need their dresses in their wardrobes gathering dust".
