New rare baby bat hanging out at Durrell

Monday 18 April 2016

There's a new addition roosting among the most endangered mammals at Durrell's Wildlife Park.

A Livingstone fruit bat pup arrived last month - the first pup to be born in captivity this year.

You can see the little pup in action below who will stay with mum Bazimini for the next few months and which is why keepers don't know the sex of it yet. When the baby gets bigger and heavier Bazimini will start parking it in creches with other infant bats in the colony.

There are thought to be less than 1,000 of these giant bats left living in the wild on their native Islands of Anjouan and Moheli in the Comoros archipelago. The Islands now have the fastest rate of deforestation in the world and Durrell is working closely with local organisations and communities to protect the forests and the bats that play an important role in the regeneration of them, acting as both pollinators and seed dispersers for many plants.

The first Livingstone's bats arrived at Durrell back in 1992, when the species had never been kept in captivity before. There are now 44 in the colony at the Wildlife Park - an important safety net population for this very rare species.

Durrell’s Mammal Keeper Edward Bell said: “This latest birth is another example of how important the research and continued refinement of the husbandry practices here at Durrell are for this, the rarest mammal species on site."

Durrell Ambassador Henry Cavill recently joined the crusade to save them by adopting ‘Ben the bat’.  You can join him and find out more about the bats here.
