OPEN LETTER: Zoo campaign group "threatening Durrell's very existence"

Wednesday 03 April 2024

A Jurat and longstanding Durrell supporter has shared concerns about the impact a small group of individuals could have on the conservation charity's future.

The charity is currently having to process a request for an EGM during which the future of the charity’s trustees and a possible independent investigation into Jersey Zoo's operations will be discussed and voted on by members.

After Express today revealed the key demands of the 'We Love the Zoo' campaign group, and the lack of clarity over its leadership, Jurat Collette Crill wrote this open letter to the Board of Trustees, which we share in full below...

To the Board of Trustees of Durrell,

I have been a member of Durrell almost all my life.

I worked there was taught by Jeremy Mallinson when, aged 15, I was studying for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

I am now aged 73 and the Zoo is deeply dear to me and to my 6 grandchildren.

I wish it to be noted that, despite being such a long-standing member, I have never been consulted by, or requested to sign anything by, the current 'Campaign Group' which is threatening Durrell's very existence.

Therefore in my view, they are acting without the knowledge, let alone the approval, of the full membership.

Wishing you a peaceful outcome to this dreadful situation,

Jurat Collette A Crill
