New recruits on the force

Tuesday 25 October 2016

Ten new recruits are now on the case fighting crime in the Island.

The new probationary Police Officers have been sworn in at the Royal Court and are now starting a 15-week rigorous training course.

The eight men and two women now face a tough programme of formal classroom work, practical tasks and fitness tests and will get to work alongside other agencies including the Ambulance Service and Fire and Rescue.

The recruits will be given a number of different "real-life" scenarios to test them as well as lessons in lifesaving, dealing with road traffic collisions and carrying out a drugs warrant.

Sergeant Collette Beechey said: “We only select the very best from the many applicants we receive and they have already been through some very demanding tests and interviews to get to this point, but this is where the real work begins.

“The training is intense and will challenge them, preparing them for their future career as police officers, often working in difficult conditions and under great pressure. But we also ensure their training is fun and stimulating.”

If they make the grade, they'll then start on patrol under the guidance of another constable in one of the force's five shifts before going out on patrol by themselves.

Sergeant Beechey said: “These recruits have a long road ahead to become fully fledged police officers but we know they have the right skills and character for the job and we are looking forward to seeing them develop.”
