Odds on for a three horse race

Thursday 01 September 2016

A local bookie is hedging his bets and predicting a three horse race in next week's Senatorial elections, for both first and last places.

Chris Benest from CB Sports Ltd says Sarah Ferguson is marginally out in front, but there’s hardly anything in it, with Christian May and Sam Mezec both still well in the running. But the race is equally tight for last place, with Stevie Ocean, Nick Le Cornu and Alvin Aaron all predicted by Mr Benest to contest the wooden spoon.

Here are the current odds on winning next Wednesday's election:

Sarah Ferguson 4 - 6

Christian May 6 - 5

Sam Mezec 9 - 4

John Young 8 - 1

Hugh Raymond 10 - 1

Mary O' Keeffe-Burgher 25 - 1

Guy de Faye 40 - 1

Mike Dun 100 - 1

Alvin Aaron 150 - 1

Nick Le Cornu 150 - 1

Stevie Ocean 150 - 1

Islanders go to the polls next Wednesday but Mr Benest isn't expecting a rush on bets.

He said: "The best bet is Sarah Ferguson, it’s a three horse race.

“There might be some business closer to the day but I wouldn’t expect to be overly busy because the hustings themselves are poorly attended.

“It points at the moment to a very low turnout because there seems to be a complete lack of interest, everybody you speak to, they have no interest in it whatsoever. The candidates have hardly conjured up any real feel for the election."

The post has fallen vacant because of the shock resignation of Senator Zoe Cameron who quit in frustration saying it was impossible to get anything done and claiming she’d been cold-shouldered by the Council of Ministers.

The term of office will last until Spring 2018.
