Changing times

Sunday 08 October 2017

There is only one week left to use your round £1 coin. From 15 October, only the 12-sided coin will be accepted in shops and a local charity is reminding islanders of the looming deadline.

Community Savings, a local charity that has been looking after the financial interests of local people since 2001, is encouraging islanders to hunt down the back of the sofa and look under the mattress for any round pounds that might get overlooked.

Just like the new pound coin, Community Savings has a new, sharper edge! Recently appointed Managing Director, Steve Eldred is looking to find ways to help more and more local people who may be facing financial difficulties and in need of help with managing their own money.

Steve Eldred said: “I am looking forward to meeting and working with individuals and local groups who might need the support and financial guidance that a truly independent community organisation can offer. We, at Community Savings, want to hear what we can do to help everyone into financial inclusion and confidence. That is why we are here.”

As Managing Director, Mr Eldred is also looking to ensure the future growth and sustainability of Community Savings and to helping financially and socially disadvantaged Jersey residents who might sometimes feel forgotten. Mr Eldred brings a wealth of experience of Financial Services and will be responsible for governance, operations and performance, working closely with the Board and Executive Team to drive change and organisational efficiencies across a range of different business areas.

As the old pound coin disappears, so too will the existing charity logo which features two Jersey Pound coins. Community Savings has established an exciting new partnership with MYJAR, a financial services company based in the UK, who are currently working on a new logo and brand refresh for the charity. The new Community Savings brand should be released very soon, as well as an update to services that include financial education and debt management programmes offering ‘Money Skills’ to the wider Jersey community accessible to all ages and backgrounds.

Brian Curtis, Executive Chairman of Community Savings, explains" “We are delighted to welcome Steve Eldred as part of our team during a period of growth and development for the charity. The role of Managing Director will specifically focus on operational excellence and introducing new modern services for customers. The number of people we are supporting is growing year on year, most are unable to access banking services and need further support to manage their finances; they are at risk of financial crisis which dramatically affects their, and usually their families, wellbeing.

"As demand for our services increases due to social and economic pressures it is vital Community Savings is resilient and sustainable, ensuring those most in need of help can access support in to the future. The withdrawal of the round pound coincides with an invigoration of our brand and approach to marketing and we are sincerely grateful of the generous support of MYJAR and look forward to working with them to develop our brand, website and resources.”
