Park picked for Island Games

Thursday 15 May 2014

Howard Davis Park will be the main hub for thousands of visiting sportsmen and women next summer, as well as being the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the NatWest Island Games XVI.

People living close to the park have been told about plans to make it the Games Village. It was picked because it is within walking distance to a lot of hotels, something which Island Games Administrator Karin Wery said should alleviate fears of there being too much traffic disruption.

Mrs Wery said the entertainment and exhibitions planned for the park will attract both Islanders and visitors during the daytime and not just those interested in sport. She said: “We are working with schools and local groups to offer cultural experiences to both locals and visiting athletes and a reason for everyone to come together during the week.”

Chairman of the Jersey 2015 Organising Committee Phil Austin said: “We have chosen a venue which is enclosed and secure, which is great for transport management, and which will enable us to create a place where the 4,000 plus competitors and accredited team officials can unwind, have something to eat and drink, get the official results, and enjoy some great entertainment.”

The Games runs from 27 June to 3 July and the park will be open to the public throughout.

The following weekend the park will be the venue for the Big Gig in the Park and organisers of both events are working together to maximise the benefits of using the same infrastructure.
