Plans go in to change craft beer and ping-pong bar into gym

Thursday 14 September 2023

A property currently home to a craft beer, ping-pong and burger bar could in future become a gym, if planning permission is given.

Owner of the Wharf Street property, Palladium Group, has applied to Planning to change the ground floor of the premises.

A planning statement for the application states: “The subject property is advantageously located within the vibrant and bustling locale of St. Helier town centre.

“This area boasts a rich array of retail outlets, leisure amenities, cultural attractions, and entertainment facilities that altogether create a dynamic urban space catering to diverse needs and interests.

“The central location of the proposed gymnasium facilitates high accessibility, offering an opportunity to enhance the health and well-being of the town's residents and workers.”

It adds: "The proposed gymnasium offers multiple social and community advantages. It will serve as a local hub promoting healthy living and personal fitness, thus aligning with public health priorities.

"As gymnasiums become an increasingly crucial part of urban life, this new facility can significantly enhance St. Helier's appeal as a living and working destination."

The property is currently the home of JB’s Brewhouse, which opened around seven years ago, and Bliss Brewery.

However, all staff moved to sister business the Lido at Havre des Pas swimming pool this summer.

However, Marcus Calvani, who co-owns the group which runs JB’s Brewhouse, said that the bar and restaurant would soon be back open in Wharf Street.

He said: “We absolutely intend to move the team back to JB’s as soon as the weather deteriorates.

“We’ve had a blast in the sun over the summer at Lido and took some of our JB’s menu and craft beer and cocktails to the beach.

"We are now looking forward to taking part in the Delicious Dine-Out Festival, which takes place in October and will focus on showcasing and celebrating local food and drink.”
