Papal knighthood for Jurat

A Jurat who has been a big part of Beaulieu Convent School for over 35 years is being honoured by the Papacy today for his contribution to the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis has named Jurat Paul Nicolle a Knight of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great.

He's being given the award at a special ceremony held in Beaulieu Convent School Chapel by Monsignor Nicholas France MBE.

One of five orders of chivalry bestowed by the Papacy, the Pontificial Equestrian Order of Saint Gregory the Great is awarded to Catholic men and women deemed to have contributed greatly to the Catholic Church. Paul Nicolle will be recognised for serving Beaulieu as a parent, as Chairman of Governors and as a Trustee.

Following the honour, Mr Nicolle will be addressed as Jurat Paul Nicolle KSG.

Beaulieu's Headmaster Chris Beirne described the Papal Knighthood, which was created by Pope Gregory XVI in 1831, as "a most fitting honour."

"It is a gesture that also honours all of us involved in the formation and education of young people at Beaulieu. Paul Nicolle’s service to the School over many years has strengthened our community, our mission and our purpose as a Catholic school," he commented.

The Pontificial Equestrian Order of Saint Gregory was created by Pope Gregory XVI (1831-1846) on September 1, 1831. It is named after his namesake Pope Gregory I (590-604).
