Opening time restrictions at French ports that have caused “significant difficulty” for Jersey’s fishing fleet have been lifted.

Opening time restrictions at French ports that have caused “significant difficulty” for Jersey’s fishing fleet have been lifted.

Since 19 July, restrictions had been in place across Cherbourg, Barneville-Carteret, and Granville.

However, following discussions with Normandy’s regional fishing committee External Relations Minister Philip Ozouf confirmed today that they had now been lifted.

“Yesterday, we received a statement from the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) confirming the removal of port opening time restrictions at Cherbourg, Barneville-Carteret, and Granville,” he said.

“These restrictions have been in place since 19 July and have caused significant difficulty for our local fishing fleet in landing their catch directly into French harbours. The removal of port opening time restrictions is therefore excellent news for our local fleet and should improve the process for landing their catch.

“On behalf of the Government of Jersey, I would therefore like to thank the regional fishing committee of Normandy for their commitment and support over the last few months as we worked towards achieving this objective. It is a testament to the strength, value, and effectiveness of our close regional cooperation.”
