Jersey Post has announced changes to its postal rates with a penny increase for local letters and a three penny rise for UK, IoM and other Channel Islands letters. They will be introduced on 11 April.
20g and 100 g European letters will now be charged at the same rate, 73p. The same goes for letters sent to the rest of the world which will cost 90p.
Tim Brown, Jersey Post’s Chief Executive, said: "Our customers have highlighted that keeping the cost of the postal service low is a real priority and we try to minimise the financial impact of our business and industry change on customers wherever possible. However, as an organisation we continue to face a number of major challenges. We have worked hard to keep this year’s increases to a minimum and we will continue to offer discounted postage rates at Christmas."
The company says that the price changes were introduced to reflect the high cost increases from Royal Mail, and the fall in value of the pound.
It says prices were also impacted by falling letter volumes and the increasing number of households to which Jersey Post must deliver. Since 2007, the quantity of letters processed by Jersey Post has declined by 60%.
