Public realm to be deep cleaned

Sunday 03 May 2020

An intensive cleaning regime to disinfect public areas is due to start this month after the purchase and donation of specialist equipment to reduce the spread of covid-19.

Arising from a partnership between the Government, a cleaning company, a bank and a car dealership, the cleaning apparatus will be mounted on vehicles to deep clean “high traffic areas” around the island.

Standard Chartered Bank Jersey is donating two of the disinfection packages, including sanitiser kits, which will operate in addition to the one purchased by government. The packages are disinfection systems with a 1000-litre tank which dispenses cleaning solution through a hose.

The news follows the announcement from the Council of Ministers that Jersey will start to ease its lockdown in a phased process, beginning this weekend

The packages will each be mounted on vehicles: one purchased by JCF Cleaning & Allied Services, the second on a van loaned to JCF by MotorMall, and the third on a Government flat-bed vehicle.

The Government will oversee the installation of all the equipment.

The programme will begin in early May, after all the equipment has been installed and staff have been trained. All chemicals and personal protective equipment required have been sourced by JCF from local suppliers.

Iain Mackenzie, Managing Director, JCF Cleaning & Allied Services, said: “By having vehicle mounted disinfector units available in Jersey, I hope that we can offer re-assurance to the community as they move around the Island or eventually re-emerge from lockdown restrictions.”

Head of Technical Support Services in Government department Growth, Housing and Environment Martin Gautier commented: “We have been pleased to assist J.C.F. Cleaning & Allied Services in having this disinfecting capability in the Island and being part of a joint effort to protect the local public.”
